Heavy Frame Straightening

A bent frame does not simply look wrong. It eats tyres, loads the driveline unevenly, and turns into a compliance problem at the next inspection.

Overview

Heavy Frame Straightening

Heavy vehicle frames are ladder rails designed to flex within a defined range. Impact, overload or a rollover pushes them outside it, and the consequences show up as dog tracking, uneven tyre wear, driveline vibration, cab and fifth-wheel misalignment and premature suspension failure.

Straightening is measurement work. We establish the reference points, measure diagonal and datum dimensions against specification, apply controlled pressure, and re-measure until the chassis is back within tolerance — then hand you the numbers.

What this service covers

  • Frame rail straightening on tractors and trailers
  • Chassis diagonal, datum and centreline measurement
  • Rail sectioning, splicing and reinforcement to specification
  • Crossmember replacement and repair
  • Fifth wheel plate and mounting alignment
  • Axle alignment and thrust angle correction
  • Cab and body mount realignment
  • Documented before-and-after measurement report

Symptoms worth measuring for

Key points

  • The trailer dog tracking — running visibly offset behind the tractor
  • Rapid or one-sided tyre wear that returns after every alignment
  • Driveline vibration that changes with load rather than with speed alone
  • Cab, hood or fairing gaps that no longer sit square
  • Fifth wheel that does not couple cleanly or sits visibly off centre
  • Suspension components failing earlier than they should

Repair, section or replace

Not every damaged rail should be straightened. Manufacturers publish limits on heating, on where a rail may be sectioned, and on how a splice must be constructed. Cracks that have propagated from a previous repair or from a drilled hole often mean the section has to be replaced rather than pulled.

We work to those limits and we tell you which category your chassis falls into before starting. A rail that has been overworked is a safety issue and a liability at inspection, and no saving is worth it.

How a heavy frame straightening job runs

Same four stages every time, so you always know which one your vehicle is in and what happens next.

01

Assess

We document the damage and look past what is visible, so the scope is right before anything is ordered.

02

Quote

An itemised written estimate — parts, labour and timeline separated — in the format your insurer works in.

03

Repair

Parts ordered on authorisation, work carried out to the manufacturer's published procedure for your vehicle.

04

Return

Quality inspection, clean-up and hand-back with your repair file and warranty documentation.

Heavy Truck & Fleet FAQ

Questions about heavy frame straightening

If yours is not here, call the shop — somebody who works on the vehicles will answer it.

How do I know if the frame is actually bent?

Measurement, not opinion. Bring the unit in and we will measure it against specification and show you the numbers — including when the answer is that the frame is fine and the problem is elsewhere.

Will the repair pass inspection?

A repair carried out within the manufacturer's published limits, properly documented, is what an inspector is looking for. We provide the measurement report and the repair documentation as part of the job.

How long does frame work take?

It depends entirely on how far out of specification the chassis is and whether sectioning is needed. We give you a realistic estimate after measuring rather than a number before.
