Overview

The bumper is the most frequently damaged part on any vehicle and the one people most often misjudge the cost of. The visible damage is only half the question — what sits behind the cover decides most of the price.

On a fifteen-year-old vehicle a bumper cover is a piece of painted plastic on a foam absorber. On a current one it is a mounting platform for parking sensors, blind-spot radar, a forward camera, washer nozzles and a pedestrian-impact structure. Same panel, very different repair.

What actually moves the number

Repair or replace

A clean scuff or a crack with structure behind it can usually be welded, filled and refinished. Missing tabs, stretched plastic or a tear through a sensor aperture means replacement.

What is behind the cover

A crushed foam absorber or a bent reinforcement bar has to be replaced — they are engineered to deform once. Leaving a crushed absorber in place transmits far more force into the vehicle next time.

Sensors and cameras

Some transfer to the new cover, some are consumables that must be replaced, and several need recalibration afterwards. This is the single biggest cost difference between an older and a newer vehicle.

Paint complexity

A solid colour is straightforward. Metallics, pearls and three-stage finishes need blending into the adjacent panels to avoid a visible edge, which adds labour and materials.

Part source

OEM, aftermarket and recycled OEM covers can differ substantially in price. Fit quality varies with them, particularly on newer vehicles where panel gaps are tight.

Ranges

What it usually comes to

Ranges assume a mainstream vehicle in average condition. Premium vehicles, exotic finishes and heavily corroded substrates sit above them.

What the price includes

If a quote is materially cheaper than the range above, it is worth asking which of these it leaves out.

Assessment of what sits behind the cover, photographed
Repair or replacement of the cover itself
Absorber, reinforcement bar and bracket where damaged
Colour matched to the panel and blended into adjacent panels
Sensor and camera removal, refit and recalibration where required
Reassembly, quality inspection and clean-up

Insurance

Claim it or pay for it?

Bumper damage frequently sits close to a typical Alberta deductible, which is exactly why it is worth getting the number before you open a claim. If the repair comes in at $900 and your deductible is $1,000, claiming makes you worse off.

Where the damage is part of a larger collision claim, it is simply a line on that estimate. Where it is standalone — a parking lot hit with no other party — paying privately is often the better outcome once you factor in the claims record.

Keeping the cost down

  • Ask about recycled OEM covers on an older vehicle — genuine parts, lower cost
  • Repair rather than replace where the plastic is sound; ask which applies to yours
  • Deal with it before the crack spreads or water reaches the lighting behind it
  • Get the written number before deciding whether to claim

FAQ

Common questions

If yours is not here, call the shop and ask.

Can a cracked bumper actually be repaired?

Often yes. Thermoplastic welding produces a genuinely strong repair when the crack is accessible and the surrounding plastic is not deformed. Where the crack passes through a mounting point or a sensor opening, replacement is the correct call.

Why is my bumper repair more expensive than my neighbour's?

Almost always sensors and paint. A radar unit, a camera or a three-stage pearl finish can double the cost of what looks like identical damage.

Do I need the sensors recalibrated?

If the vehicle has parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring or a forward camera and the repair moved them, yes. A vehicle handed back with a mis-aimed radar looks perfect and is not.
