How Much Does Hail Damage Repair Cost in Calgary?

Hail is priced by counting dents, not by guessing. Here is how the number is built and what it usually comes to.

Overview

Southern Alberta gets hail most summers, and a single storm can dimple every horizontal panel on a vehicle in a quarter of an hour. The cost depends almost entirely on how many dents there are, how big they are, and whether the paint survived.

In most cases it did. Hail rarely breaks a finish, which makes paintless dent repair the default method — the metal is worked back from behind the panel and the factory paint is never touched. That is cheaper and faster than conventional bodywork, and it leaves nothing on the vehicle's history.

Price drivers

What actually moves the number

Dent count and size

Estimates are built from a dent matrix: every panel is counted and graded by dent size. That matrix drives the labour hours the insurer authorises, so an accurate count is the whole ballgame.

Which panels

Roofs, hoods and deck lids take the worst of it and are also the most labour-intensive to access from behind. Damage to the sides usually means the storm came in at an angle and there was wind behind it.

PDR versus paint

Where dents are too sharp, too deep or the paint has cracked, that panel drops out of PDR and into conventional repair and refinish — which costs several times more per panel.

Aluminium panels

Aluminium hoods and deck lids are slower to work and cost more per dent than steel. Common on newer trucks and premium vehicles.

Glass and trim

A storm heavy enough to dent a roof will often crack a windshield and damage mouldings, mirror caps and light housings too.

Ranges

What it usually comes to

Ranges assume a mainstream vehicle in average condition. Premium vehicles, exotic finishes and heavily corroded substrates sit above them.

What the price includes

If a quote is materially cheaper than the range above, it is worth asking which of these it leaves out.

Full assessment with documented dent matrix per panel
Paintless dent repair across all viable panels
Conventional repair and refinish where PDR is not viable
Roof skin replacement on severe strikes
Windshield and glass replacement where the storm broke it
Moulding, mirror cap and light housing replacement

Insurance

Claim it or pay for it?

Hail is a comprehensive claim, not an at-fault collision, and most Alberta policies treat it differently from an at-fault loss. A number of Alberta policies also waive the deductible on hail entirely — worth a two-minute call to your broker before you decide anything.

Because it is comprehensive, the usual reasoning about whether claiming will hurt you does not apply in the same way. For most people with comprehensive coverage, a hail claim is straightforwardly worth making.

Keeping the cost down

  • Open the claim and book the assessment in the first few days — the queue is the cost
  • Make sure the dent count is done properly; undercounting causes supplement fights later
  • Ask whether your policy waives the hail deductible before assuming it does not
  • If you are keeping an older vehicle regardless, prioritise the panels that matter

FAQ

Common questions

If yours is not here, call the shop and ask.

Will claiming hail damage raise my premium?

Hail is comprehensive rather than at-fault, and most Alberta policies treat the two differently. Your broker can tell you exactly how yours handles it — ask before you decide.

My car is ten years old. Is it worth repairing?

Sometimes the repair exceeds the vehicle's value and the insurer declares a total loss. We will give you a straight assessment either way, and if you intend to keep it we can focus on the panels that actually matter to you.

How long is the wait after a big storm?

Longer than anyone would like, because every shop in the city fills in the same week. Booking the assessment early is the single biggest thing you control.
