Glass claims and ADAS calibration
Most comprehensive policies in Alberta include glass, and many treat chip repair with no deductible at all. That combination makes leaving a chip alone genuinely irrational: the repair is free or nearly free while it is a chip, and it becomes a several-hundred-dollar replacement the first time the temperature swings.
Where a windshield does need replacing, the significant modern cost is calibration. On most vehicles built in the last decade there is a forward-facing camera looking through the glass, feeding lane keeping, adaptive cruise and automatic emergency braking. Its aim is measured in fractions of a degree, and changing the glass moves it.
Have this ready
- Your policy number and vehicle details including trim level
- Whether the vehicle has lane keeping, adaptive cruise or automatic braking
- Whether it has a rain sensor, heated glass or head-up display
- A photograph of the chip or crack with something for scale
- Confirmation of your glass deductible
The detail
Glass claims and ADAS calibration
Chip repair first
Smaller than a two-dollar coin, outside the driver's sightline and away from the edge is usually a sub-hour resin repair.
Separate glass deductible
Many policies carry a lower deductible for glass than for collision. Check the specific figure rather than assuming it is the same.
Calibration is part of the job
Static, dynamic or both, depending on what the manufacturer specifies for your vehicle. We supply the completion report for your records.
Safe drive-away time
Manufacturer-approved urethane needs time to cure, and in a Calgary winter that is longer than most people expect. It is not a figure worth rushing.
What we do on your claim
You should not be managing your own claim while also getting to work without a car.
Document
Photographs and a written scope of every damaged area before anything is touched.
Submit
An itemised estimate in the format adjusters work in, followed up rather than left in a queue.
Supplement
Hidden damage photographed and submitted the same day it is exposed, then chased to approval.
Hand back
Quality inspection, your full repair file, and a warranty you can hold us to.
Is chip repair really covered with no deductible?
It very often is under Alberta comprehensive coverage, but it depends on your policy. It takes one call to confirm and it is worth making.
Do I need recalibration after a windshield replacement?
If the vehicle has camera-based driver assistance systems, yes. A windshield replaced without recalibration leaves a vehicle that looks finished and reads the road incorrectly.
Does a glass claim affect my premium?
Glass sits under comprehensive rather than at-fault collision, and is generally treated differently. Your broker can tell you how your specific policy handles it.
