How Much Does a Car Paint Job Cost in Calgary?
Paint prices vary more than almost any other repair, because what is being sold under the same words varies enormously.
Typical range
- Single panel refinish
- $500 – $1,200
- Multi-panel with blending
- $1,200 – $3,000
- Full respray, quality work
- $6,000 – $12,000
- Colour change with jambs and shuts
- $10,000 – $20,000+
Overview
The word 'respray' covers everything from masking the trim and spraying over the existing finish to stripping the vehicle, correcting the substrate and refinishing it properly with the door jambs and shuts done. Those are not the same product and they should not carry the same price.
Almost all of the cost sits in preparation, not in paint. A finish sprayed over contamination, failing clear coat or unaddressed corrosion will lift within a season in Alberta conditions regardless of what went on top of it.

What actually moves the number
Preparation
Stripping, sanding, dent and corrosion correction and priming is the bulk of the labour on any paint job. A quote that looks unusually cheap is almost always cheap here.
Colour type
Solid colours are the simplest. Metallics need careful control, pearls and three-stage finishes need more coats and more blending, and some colours are notoriously hard to match.
Blending
New paint meeting old at a hard edge is visible. Carrying the colour into adjacent panels is the only way to make a repair disappear — cutting blend time is a false economy you will see in daylight.
Jambs, shuts and engine bay
A colour change that stops at the visible surfaces announces itself every time a door opens. Doing it properly means disassembly and considerably more labour.
Substrate condition
Failed clear coat, corrosion or previous poor repairs all have to be corrected first. This is where a quote most often moves after the vehicle is seen in person.
Ranges
What it usually comes to
Ranges assume a mainstream vehicle in average condition. Premium vehicles, exotic finishes and heavily corroded substrates sit above them.

| Two to three panels with blending | $1,200 – $3,000 | 3 – 6 days |

What the price includes
If a quote is materially cheaper than the range above, it is worth asking which of these it leaves out.
Insurance
Claim it or pay for it?
Paintwork as part of a collision claim is covered as part of that repair, including the blend labour needed to make it invisible. If an estimate has cut blending to bring the number down, that is worth questioning.
Cosmetic resprays, fade repair and colour changes are not insurable events — they are private work, quoted and paid directly.
Keeping the cost down
- Fix clear-coat failure before it delaminates; polishing cannot fix lifted clear
- Combine a respray with other bodywork so the vehicle only goes through prep once
- Ask exactly what preparation is included before comparing two quotes
- Be realistic about matching a heavily faded panel — sometimes adjacent panels must go too
Why are some paint quotes half the price of others?
Preparation. The cheap version sprays over what is there; the proper version corrects the substrate first. Ask each shop what preparation is included and the gap usually explains itself.
Can you match my colour exactly?
In almost every case. We read the panel with a spectrophotometer rather than relying on the code, and verify with a sprayed test card before committing.
How long before I can wash it?
Treat it gently for thirty days — hand wash only, no automatic brushes, no wax or sealant, and no pressure-washing the repaired area.
