Bumper Repair & Replacement

Bumpers take the first hit and carry more technology than most people expect. We repair them where the plastic and sensors allow, and replace them where repair would compromise how they perform next time.

Overview

Bumper Repair & Replacement

The bumper cover is the most frequently damaged part on any vehicle, and on modern cars it is also one of the busiest — parking sensors, radar units, cameras, washer nozzles and pedestrian-impact absorbers all live behind it.

That changes the repair decision. A cover with a clean scuff is straightforward. A cover with a tear running through a sensor mount is a replacement, because a sensor sitting a few millimetres off its designed position will read the world incorrectly.

What this service covers

  • Scuff, scrape and light-gouge repair
  • Plastic welding for cracks and tears
  • Mounting tab and bracket reconstruction
  • Full bumper cover replacement and refinish
  • Absorber, reinforcement bar and bracket replacement
  • Parking sensor and camera removal, refit and calibration
  • Colour-matched refinishing and blending
  • Steel and chrome bumper repair on trucks

Repair or replace — how we decide

Bumper covers are thermoplastic, which means they can be welded, filled and refinished successfully. Repair makes sense when the damage is surface-level or a clean crack in an area with structure behind it. Replacement makes sense when tabs are missing, when the plastic has stretched and deformed, when a tear crosses a sensor aperture, or when the cover has already been repaired once in the same spot.

Cost is only part of the decision. A repaired cover that no longer holds shape correctly will show uneven panel gaps and can allow water into the lighting and sensor housings behind it.

What sits behind the cover

Behind the visible cover there is usually a foam or honeycomb energy absorber and a steel or aluminium reinforcement bar. Both are engineered to deform in a specific way during an impact. A crushed absorber that is left in place because the cover looked fine afterwards means the next impact — even a minor one — transmits far more force into the vehicle and its occupants.

We inspect behind every damaged cover as a matter of course, and we photograph what we find so you can see why a component is on the estimate.

Sensors, cameras and calibration

Front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot radar and forward-facing cameras are frequently mounted in or immediately behind the bumper. Some transfer to a new cover; some are consumables that need replacing when the cover is changed; and several require calibration once refitted.

We check the manufacturer's procedure for your specific vehicle rather than assuming. A vehicle handed back with a mis-aimed radar looks perfect and is not.

Collision & Autobody FAQ

Questions about bumper repair & replacement

If yours is not here, call the shop — somebody who works on the vehicles will answer it.

Can a cracked bumper actually be repaired?

Often, yes — thermoplastic welding produces a genuinely strong repair when the crack is accessible and the surrounding plastic is not deformed. Where the crack passes through a mounting point or a sensor opening, replacement is the correct call.

My bumper only has a scuff. Do you have to paint the whole thing?

Not necessarily. Isolated damage away from a body line can often be spot-repaired and blended. Damage spread across the face of the cover usually needs the full panel to guarantee an even finish.

How long does a bumper repair take?

A repair and refinish is typically two to three days including cure time. A replacement depends on parts availability — in stock, often the same turnaround; on order, we will tell you the ETA when we book you in.
