Calgary is hard on windshields for two specific reasons. The gravel and sand put down through winter stays on the roads well into spring, and every chinook cycle throws it back up at highway speed. Then the temperature swings do the rest — a cold windshield hit with hot defrost air, or a warm one hit by cold rain, expands unevenly and a chip that has been sitting there for weeks suddenly runs the width of the glass.

On most vehicles built in the last decade there is a forward-facing camera looking through the windshield, feeding lane keeping and automatic emergency braking.
